If you want the field trips that you take with your children to support their education, then you need to do more that just visit the site. Keeping a journal of the field trips will increase the long-term benefits of the experiences.
- Having your children document what they saw on the field trip helps them fix the learning experience more firmly in their brains.
- The record of the field trip, if kept, can be used as a reference for later work or visits.
Demonstration of this activity
To keep the memories of my field trips, I bought a 3-ring binder. I bought my binder in Office Depot, but you can get them on Amazon, if you perfer to buy online.
I created a title page for my journal binder. I included a picture of my logo, a flying barn owl. Then I replaced the paper in the clear pocket of the binder cover with my title page.
Field Trip Activity Directions
Materials needed
- 3-ring binder with a clear pocket in the front cover
- Paper on which to create title page
Pre-Field trip Activity
- Explain to your children the reason for keeping a journal about the field trips that they will be taking.
- You may choose to purchase one binder for the family, or a binder for each child.
- Have your children design a title page for their new field trip binder. They can draw pictures or find images to print from the Internet. They might like a more creative title than I gave in my example.
- Slide the created title page into the outside pocket in the front cover of the binder. If the binder you purchased does not have a front pocket, then slide the created title page into a sheet protector and put the sheet protector in the binder as the first page.
